SOIL AND GEOLOGY
Well-Drained Walla Walla Soils
The site was recently surveyed and described by a team from Portland State University. Their findings conclude that the hills were formed by both ancient (more than 100,000 years ago) and recent (12,000 – 15,000 years ago) Missoula Flood erosion of The Dalles Formation. There is extensive deposition of The Dalles Formation and Missoula Flood cobblestone. Lower loess formed during the ancient Missoula Flood period, and upper loess formed in the most recent Missoula Flood period.
